The Plot: VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE

The play opens present-day in a farmhouse located in Bucks County, PA. Middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia (his adopted sister) have lived comfortably at home, caring for their theater-enthusiast parents. Masha, their world-famous movie-star sister, supports them financially because neither found the energy or interest to grow up and get a job.

As they drink coffee and wait for a blue heron to land in their pond, we get a glimpse into their monotonous lives. The two reflect on the theatrical background their parents provided, the opportunities they missed by remaining at home, and unrequited loves. But fate soon interrupts their life of self-pity. Masha arrives home on a surprise visit with her new boy toy, Spike

Masha announces she's been invited to a costume party being thrown by a very wealthy woman just up the road, and she wants Vanya and Sonia to join her. Upon hearing about Masha's busy schedule and seeing that she has a hot, young boyfriend, Sonia becomes even more depressed about the monotonous life she leads. Meanwhile, Vanya is mesmerized by Spike who has stripped to his underwear to take a dip in the pond.

Enter Cassandra, the soothsayer/cleaning woman, who warns them of coming disaster. It seems Masha's visit isn't just about the party. Her plans will disrupt the household as issues of sibling rivalry, regret, love, and lust rise to the surface.
